((Steph’s dad was Arthur Brown, the Cluemaster. He was an angry drunk and low ranking criminal, constantly in and out of jail for as long as she can remember. Steph’s mom Crystal became addicted to pain pills to deal with Arthur’s constant physical abuse. Steph’s relationship with her mom didn’t was nonexistent until she became Spoiler at fifteen, when her mom got clean. Her dad attempted to kill both her and her mom in the final issue of Steph’s run as Batgirl, but failed. Regardless, of all of that and the fact that she sunk into a deep depression after being knocked up by her scummy ex and giving it up for adoption just before her sixteenth birthday, Steph is consistently one of the most optimistic DC characters. Lord knows how. >_<))

I have one last guest post for you this week. This is from a high school senior, Kate O’Donoghue. As soon as I asked for guest posts Kate shot her hand up and then continued to request the opportunity. Comics needs persistent, passionate fans like Kate. I hope you enjoy her thoughts that follow:

I live in two different worlds. Sadly, neither have superheroes, but both are pretty great. One is always there, keeping me up, making me laugh, making me cry. The other is always there, keeping me up, making me laugh, making me cry. Both teach me, but never the same lessons. I exist on the Internet, but I live in high school.

I’m sure you’ve all heard the tales. The girl is taunted, her books shoved from her hands and across the coffee stained floors, all because she happened to be wearing a Batman shirt and reading the latest issue of Wolverine. I won’t be telling you that tale. Yes, I am a high school student. Yes, I am a girl. Yes, I read comic books. No, actually, I have never heard any flack about it.

I wish I had been this awesome in High School! While I did find friends who were interested in comics and superheroes and such, I never really displayed it to most of my classmates. I rarely visited the comic shop for some reason, even though it is a nice shop. I regret it now, but I’m making up for lost time now in college! Right now, I have converted a friend into enjoying Gail Simone’s Birds of Prey, and I have convinced a few other friends to read Saga. Heck, I’ve even started going to comic book shops to buy comics (only Saga, Buffy Season 9, and Captain Marvel, but still!). It has definitely made me happier to be more free with myself. Good article!

I remember reading this comic at random when I was a kid, and I was just like, BUTWHAJEANGREYHASRETURNED!?!? And I flipped out. Little did I realize this was an 80s marvel comics, and it was actually Madelyne Pryor, another character who got the short end of the stick. Oh well, that’s comics for ya!

Not too painful….I don’t really buy any DCs unless I can buy them cheap at comic shows, but I did go to the store and buy the first Blue Beetle, which was a disappointing story but that’s another story.
